Top court gives partial victory to gay couples

The Globe and Mail quoted SGM’s Cynthia Petersen in its coverage of the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Hislop v. Canada, in which the Court held that the federal government discriminated against gays and lesbians by limiting survivor benefits to those whose partner died after January 1, 1998, but refused to order retroactive payments. It perpetuates the discrimination that these same-sex couples suffered in the ‘80s and ‘90s Petersen said, noting that granting full arrears would have had virtually no impact on the Canada Pension Plan. This is not a benefit that comes from tax revenues, she added. These people contributed to it throughout their working lives.
